Purpose

To provide a Chaplain dedicated to providing God’s healing presence and care to the children and their families in the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

The Importance of Spiritual Care

A serious illness raises a variety of spiritual concerns for both children and their families.  In addition to feeling bad because of their illness, children often sense the stress their illness causes members in their family.  Children need to know that God is with them and watching over them and their family during their illness.

Parents struggle with issues like “Why is this happening to my child?”  “Why does my child have to suffer?”  Parents experience anxiety while waiting for a diagnosis, during treatment, over medical outcomes, and about their child’s future wellbeing.  Making medical decisions for their child’s care oftentimes is difficult and stressful.

A Pediatric Chaplain is a specialist who is skilled in providing spiritual care to children and families.  The Chaplain works closely with the medical personnel to serve children, taking into account the spiritual and emotional developmental of children as well as the effect the illness has on them. The Chaplain also understands the vital relationship parents have with their child and serves to support and assist them during their child’s medical crisis.

 Kiwanis Pediatric Chaplain for
University of Iowa Children’s Hospital

Currently there is no permanent chaplain at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.  As service organizations whose focus is on the needs of children and youth, the Kiwanis Clubs of Nebraska and Iowa have made a commitment to establish a permanent, fulltime Pediatric Chaplain at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

Through a variety of fund raising efforts and through the encouragement of private charitable giving from its membership and other interested people, the  Kiwanis Clubs in are turning the dream of a Pediatric Chaplain into reality.

Chaplain Noelle Andrew is temporarily funded by
a grant from Children's Miracle Network.  Kiwanis Clubs are
continuing fundraising to permanently endow her position.
